Optical tweezers are a technique for trapping and manipulation of nano/micromaterials and Gaussian beam has been used in a trapping laser. This has no orbital angular momentum, while optical vortex has a spiral wavefront generating an angular momentum. Conventional optical tweezers have three degrees of freedom: wavelength, laser intensity and beam profile. Using optical vortex, a new degree of freedom (orbital angular momentum) can be introduced. We performed optical trapping of polystyrene particles on nano-structures using optical vortex and followed the trapping behavior by microfluorescence observation.
