Ionomer thin film plays a crucial role as ionic conductor at cathode catalyst layer and strongly influences the performance of a PEMFC. The electrochemical performance can be limited by the transport of protons, electrons, or reactant gases (H2 and O2) to the catalyst sites. Since the ionomer film coating the carbon-supported Pt-based catalysts (Pt/C) is distributed in spatially heterogeneous manner at electrode, recently researchers are focusing on substrate dependent attribution of proton (H+) conductivity. However, the effect of reactant gases on ionomer H+ conductivity is barely reported. In this work we are investigating the influence of reactant gases on Nafion thin-film H+ conductivity at quartz using Pt IDEs.
