The development of near-infrared (NIR) dyes is inevitable for the further improvement in the PCE by wide wavelength photon harvesting from the visible-NIR wavelength region. At the same time, their deeper HOMO energy enables them for their use with the Cobalt and Copper-based redox electrolyte leading to higher open-circuit voltage. In this work, novel NIR-sensitive unsymmetrical squaraine dyes (SQ) with the mother core but different electron-withdrawing groups substituted in the central squaric acid core were designed and subjected to their photophysical characterizations to validate their suitability as sensitizers for DSSCs. Newly designed unsymmetrical squaraine dyes show sharp and intense peak appearing mainly in the far red-NIR wavelength region. Energy band diagram of the dyes justifies their suitability as sensitizers for DSSCs based-on TiO2 along with iodine and cobalt-based redox electrolytes.
