In order to investigate the origin of the high proton conductivity of Nafion, a polyelectrolyte, the electronic state of water molecules in Nafion was measured by soft X-ray emission spectroscopy. Since this method is a photon-in and photon-out technique, the measurement of humidified Nafion was possible by using an X-ray transmission window. The results of the measurement and analysis suggested that the water molecules in Nafion have the highest hydrogen bonding at 18 degree, which is different from bulk water. It was found that the water molecules in Nafion have different properties from bulk water.
