Poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA), which is a biodegradable polymer obtained from renewable resources, is attractive as an advanced material having optical activity and piezoelectricity. Precise and versatile control of the structure is indispensable for the optimization of these properties. We have demonstrated that the orientation of PLLA crystals can be controlled precisely through crystal growth from a magnetically oriented nucleating agent. This method allows to design the oriented structure freely in a film, e.g., vertical orientation of polymer chains with respect to film surface, whereas conventional methods never provide such a unique orientation. In this study, we prepared three-dimensionally oriented PLLA films with different orientations with respective to the film surfaces. Their properties including biodegradability were discussed in relation with the orientation of crystal domains in the films.
