▲ [23a-D315-11] The Production of the 4-Cyano-4-Pentylbiphenyl (5CB) Microdroplets in the Water for Optical Trapping Applications
キーワード:4-Cyano-4-Pentylbiphenyl (5CB), Microdroplets, Water
Nematic liquid crystal such as 4-Cyano-4-Pentylbiphenyl (5CB) offers a wide potential application as microsensors and actuators in liquids. Optical tweezers can be used to contactlessly manipulate the liquid crystal in the form of microdroplets. However, the production of the liquid crystal in a controlled size remains difficult. This study aims to study production conditions of 4-Cyano-4-Pentylbiphenyl (5CB) microdroplets in the water for optical trapping applications. 5CB (0.5 to 1 µL) is mixed with deionized water (1 to 2 mL) and sonicated (1 to 3 minutes) to form a 5CB microdroplets solution. Then, 5 µL of 5CB microdroplets solution is pipetted on to glass slide to be observed under optical tweezers. The image of microdroplets is analyzed using ImageJ software to obtain size distribution of 5CB microdroplets form. The piconewton force of optical trapping requires proper microdroplets size to be optically trapped. Therefore, this study is significant for producing a 5CB microdroplet as a probe in actuator or sensing using optical trapping applications or related fields.
