By using Ar, Ar/H2, and Ar/O2, we investigated the effect of carrier gas on the chemical state of the Co catalyst during temperature rise and SWCNT growth. When Ar was used, most of Co was carbonized during growth, but the Co carbide ratio decreased gradually for Ar/O2 and Ar/H2. For Ar/H2, Co became metallic during SWCNT growth. SWCNT yield became the maximum, when Ar/O2 was used as a carrier gas.
