Nanometer-scale photochromism in photochromic single crystals is potential for the realization of nano-optics-based natural intelligent devices. In previous studies, we found that photoisomerization at the nanoscale in diarylethene crystals gives rise to a complex chain of photoisomerization due to the composite of photoisomerization and crystalline distortion. In this study, we have measured the changes in electronic properties of nanometer-size photochromic crystals due to photoisomerization by scanning tunneling spectroscopy, aiming to connect this nanoscale photoisomerization to macroscopic functional applications.
