In this study, we prepare highly conductive composite hydrogels by free radical polymerization of acrylamide monomers dispersed into commercial suspensions of PEDOT:PSS. Additionally, a simple thermo-mechanical annealing process produced stable, low resistance ohmic contacts to Au electrodes, allowing accurate characterization of the electrical and electrochemical properties of the composite PEDOT hydrogel. High electrical conductivities of ~15 S/cm were determined for ~100 micron thick channels, thanks to carrier mobilities matching that of traditional thin-film PEDOT:PSS. Inclusion of phenylboronic acid in the composite matrix provided a basis for coupling boronic acid equilibrium and PEDOT electro-catalytic activity in cathodic potentials, giving rise to a kinetically controlled electrochemical signal of diol esterification which was demonstrated for glucose detection.
