Hydrolysis of polymeric materials are essential in a series of research fields and chemical industries. The hydrolysis reactions take place at the surface of the solid and facilitated by chemical catalyst or enzymes. Since the reaction proceeds at the heterogeneous interface, precise kinetic analysis of the reaction has been difficult. Here we report the synthesis of polymeric micro-spheres that are chemically and enzymatically degradable. These micro-spheres change their resonance peak position with a linear relationship with the decrease in size. By optically tracing the peak shift, we can monitor the reaction kinetics of the polymer degradation in situ with high precision. Kinetic analysis of the hydrolysis reactions of a synthetic polymer, poly-imine, and silk fibroin protein are achieved.
