We recently found that ZnO nanowire sensors modified by alkyl phosphonic acid SAMs have high sensitivity in detecting aliphatic aldehydes. However, since alkyl chains seems to have almost no reactivity, contribution of the alkyl chains to the sensors is unclear. In this research, we utilized per-deuterated phosphonic acids to distinguish the aldehyde molecules from the SAMs and succeeded in tracking their behavior in the SAMs.
