Scintillator material is one of the luminescent materials which can convert high energy photons such as γ-rays and X-rays to lower energy photons such as ultraviolet and visible light immediately after the absorption of the ionizing radiation. Usually, scintillators are used in combination with a photodetector which is called a scintillation detector. In the past few years, the development of the novel scintillator of Ce-doped Gd3(Al,Ga)5O12 (GAGG) had shown the potential candidate of very high scintillation light yield of 46,000 ph/MeV with a main scintillation decay time of 162 ns. Since then the Ce-doped gadolinium-base garnet is becoming one of the interesting research topics for high-performance solid scintillators. This study has the aim to investigate other gadolinium-based garnets, specifically Gd3(Al,Sc)5O12 (GASG) which can be single crystal growth by floating zone method. From the similar crystal structure, Ce-doped GASG is expected to have a similar great result to the Ce-doped GAGG counterpart. In this study, Ce-doped Gd3(Al5-xScx)O12 (x=0.5, 1, 1.5, 2) single crystal has been synthesized and systematically measured both photoluminescence (PL) and scintillation properties including PL emission map, PL decay time, X-ray-induced scintillation spectra, scintillation decay time, afterglow analysis, γ-ray-irradiated pulse-height spectra, and absolute scintillation light yield. The photographs of Ce-doped GASG samples present lightened yellow color and more transparency upon the increasing ratio of Sc in each crystal. The emission at 560–610 nm originated from the Ce3+ 5d-4f transition in the garnet host are observed in the PL emission contour graph.
