Radiative cooling (RC) is a method of releasing heat energy into space through black-body radiation. This research field has attracted much attention in recent years because RC can cool objects without electricity. However, there are cases where radiative cooling is not desirable. For example, the surface of a car windshield freezes on a sunny morning because the glass has a relatively high blackbody emissivity in the mid-infrared region (λ=8-13 µm). To prevent this, the windshield is sometimes covered with a cloth.
We found transparent "non-radiative materials (non-RC)" materials in this research. Glass plates coated with ITO (Indium Tin Oxide), DMD (AZO/Ag/AZO), and AgNWs (silver nanowires) were examined. They are transparent in the visible region with high reflectivity in the mid-infrared region.
