△ [25p-E105-14] Plasma Depolymerization of Fucoidan from Brown Algae (Macrocystis pyrifera) Using a Plasma-Liquid Interface Process

Aqueous solution containing fucoidan extracted from Macrocystis pyrifera was treated with a plasma-liquid interface process using DBD plasma of argon gas in open air condition. GPC measurements on the samples before and after the treatment indicated that the molecular weight of the samples was reduced from 10-100 kDa down to 0.3-3 kDa after 10-min treatment. Infrared spectra of the samples indicated that our process does not cause significant removal and/or destruction of sulfated groups which are indispensable for physiological activity of fucoidan.
