An optical AI accelerator consisting of a multistage Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with two directional couplers and a phase shifter is expected to enable faster computation and lower power consumption than electronic circuits.
GaN has an electro-optic effect, which enables modulation at GHz-order, which is faster than silicon MZI.
The device using a channel waveguide with stronger confinement than that of ferroelectrics is expected to be miniaturized.
In this study, we investigate the structure of electric-field-applied phase shifter and fabricate and evaluate MZI.
