It has been believed that the magnetization response to excitation by circularly polarized light is fundamentally different for ferrimagnetic and ferromagnetic materials. While single-shot homogeneous complete helicity-dependent magnetization switching (HDMS) has been observed in ferrimagnetic Gd–Fe–Co alloys, ferromagnetic [Co/Pt]N multilayers require cumulative effects of multiple pulses to achieve HDMS. In this study, we show that both homogeneous and cumulative HDMS can be realized by systematically changing the angular momentum compensation and thermal diffusion in Gd–Fe–Co thin films.
