[15p-PA01-54] Diamagnetic levitation of solid powder by permanent magnets
キーワード:磁場や磁性体を⽤いた応⽤技術、磁気分離、磁場中の計測/分析技術
Diamagnetic levitation is known as an interesting technology that can levitate an object in a static magnetic field at room temperature without any outer stimulus, which enables fundamental scientific experiments like solidification of liquid or crystallization of an ionic material which is dissolved in water levitating in the magnetic field. However, since the magnetic susceptibility of the diamagnetic material is very small, it is generally considered that a hybrid superconducting magnet is required for magnetic levitation. Recently, we carried out a detailed simulation of magnetic field around small (< 1 cm) permanent magnets and found that, in a certain arrangement of magnets, magnetic force is surprisingly enhanced and reaches strong enough value to magnetically levitate inorganic materials. In this paper, we will report diamagnetic levitation of sodium chloride powder. So far, diamagnetic levitation has been rarely reported even with superconducting magnets, however, our experiments revealed that detailed investigation of the field makes magnetic levitation much easier. Our technique can be applied to the development of microscopic spherical lenses or study of thermodynamic phenomena like crystallization of an ionic material which is dissolved in water levitating in a magnetic field without any container.
