Wearable bioelectronics gain extraordinary attention due to their ability to monitor human health status continuously. In this study, we leveraged the versatile thermal drawing process and first developed a flexible microelectronic fiber with bioanalytical functions that can be woven into textiles as a new form of wearable bioelectronics. Compared with mainstream manufacturing technologies, including photolithography and printing technology, such fiber-based bioelectronics provide the versatility in functions, large sensing areas and the wearing comfort. To avoid issues caused by using fiber tips as sensing surfaces, including small terminal sensing area and limited scalability, we adopted the laser micromachining technique to realize functions along fiber length. We were able to develop biosensing functions on the longitudinal surface of the fiber with two sensing electrodes for Na+ and uric acid (UA), respectively. Additionally, we succeed in integrating a pseudo reference electrode (p-RE) on fiber to realize all-in-fiber electrochemical sensing.
