Strain sensors based on structural color have been developed using photonic crystals and other materials, but it is difficult to tune the softness of the device, hindering its potential application in biological sensors. We have addressed this issue by designing a strain sensor that utilizes the plasmon resonance and interference effects of gold nanoparticles to create a structural color layer that is ultra-thin, at less than 1 µm in thickness. This allows for adjustable softness in the sensor. The fabricated sensor demonstrated a change in color from green to red with as little as 20% elongational strain. We also examined the feasibility of using this sensor in biological sensing applications.
