[16p-PA08-8] The Spin Polarization of Palladium on Magneto-Electric Cr2O3

We have investigated palladium thin film on the magneto-electric chromia, Cr2O3, using spin polarized inverse photoemission spectroscopy (SPIPES), as well as high-resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (HR-ARPES) measurements at HiSOR BL-1. This effort has provided insight into both the unoccupied and occupied states in the vicinity of the chemical potential. This helps elucidate spintronic properties of this Pd on Cr2O3 magneto-electric bilayer structure. The hugely surface sensitive nature of SPIPES is advantageous for characterizing the surface/boundary polarization.
In this presentation, we present evidence of persistent spin polarization of Pd overlayer on Cr2O3 and band structure of thin Pd on Cr2O3. In addition, the polarization near the bottom of the conduction band reverses sign in the very thin Pd overlayer thicknesses limit (SPIPES). We have also seen the clear indications of surface states in thin Pd films on Cr2O3 (HR-ARPES). The results of SPIPES show evidence of magnetic behavior in Pd suggesting that Pd on Cr2O3 is more than just a paramagnetic with an induced polarization arising from the chromia boundary polarization.
