Insect cells have the toughness to grow in room-temperature environments and their olfactory receptors have a sensing performance to detect target odor molecules with high sensitivity and selectivity. In this study, we visualized the insect cell-substrate interfaces, the core of the biohybrid odor sensor, by optical interference. We first found that the surface of cell membranes was covered with sialic sugar blushes with less electrostatic repulsion leading to tight contact with the substrate. Our measurement system can potentially apply to visualize cell adhesion interfaces toward the further design of various biohybrid sensors.
