In sensing using mechanical vibrators, it is important how small the mass of fine particles can be detected (i.e., mass resolution). We found that applying a phase-locked loop to an optomechanical prober consisting of a coupled bottle resonator provides a single-bacteria level of mass resolution. In the future, miniaturization of the device and improvement of the sensitivity of the detection system are expected to lead to the development of ultra-sensitive biochips.
