Keywords:Lipid bilayer, permeation of protons, membrane potential

Ion permeation of lipid membranes and the associated membrane potential are important for in vivo signal transduction. In general, ions can hardly penetrate lipid membranes, but it is known that the permeability of protons is relatively large. In this study, proton permeation through lipid bilayers was evaluated by observing pH changes in giant vesicles (GUVs). We report the results of quantitative evaluation of the permeability of protons.
