[Objective] Mucosal immunoregulatory lactic acid bacteria (immunobiotic LAB) is a potential tool to improve gut immunity in pigs1). On the other hand, young animals develop immunogenic potential by acquiring indigenous bacteria from their mother. This was to develop a library of immunobiotics originated from swine.
[Methods] Pure isolates from vagina, milk and feces were identified at species level by 16S rRNA gene sequence, and evaluated for their sugar assimilation and immunoregulatory functions by using porcine intestinal epithelial (PIE) cells.
[Results] Several strains of Lactobacillus Spp. especially L. plantarum were isolated from vagina, milk and feceal source. Selected strains were able to positively modulate the host immune responses, categorized as “immunobiotics”. These immunobiotic candidates could be promising alternatives for antimicrobials to modulate the gut immunity against enteric infections in pigs.
