The Japanese quail is used for egg production in Japan. Recently, we established two wild-derived quail strains (W50 and W75) using domestic quail strain (Dom) and captive wild quails. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to reveal phenotypic differences of egg traits among three quail strains. Eggs were collected from the adult females in three quail strains (Dom: n = 6, W50: n = 5, and W75: n = 7) at Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine. Five egg traits (egg weight, eggshell weight, yolk weight, albumen weight, and eggshell thickness) were measured. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s HSD test were conducted to test strain effect of egg traits. A significant phenotypic difference was found in egg weight by one-way ANOVA. Mean ± SD in egg weight were 9.9 ± 0.3 (Dom), 9.0 ± 0.3 (W50), and 8.4 ± 0.3 (W75). Tukey’s HSD test revealed a significant difference between Dom and W75 strains in egg weight. In the remaining four egg traits, no significant strain effect was found. In the future, we will conduct phenotypic analyses using three quail strains to know the differences between wild-derived and domestic quail populations.
