Chronic sinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and asthma are frequently associated diseases, and the involvement of Type 2 inflammation has been clarified in the pathological condition including innate immunity by epithelium-derived cytokines (TSLP, IL-25, IL-33) and adapted immunity centered on Th2 cells in the upper and lower airways. IL-4 and IL-13 have overlapping and unique functions, play important and central roles in the development of Type 2 inflammation, and are known to be involved in tissue fibrosis and remodeling etc. This lecture will overview the mechanism of intractable airway disease states such as nasal polyp formation in CRSwNP and remodeling in asthma and the possibility of its control based on the latest findings.
