Hokkaido University has been collaborating with the School of Veterinary Medicine, the University of Zambia (UNZA) since its establishment in 1982. And Hokkaido University Research Center for Zoonosis Control (CZC), predecessor of the current institute, established Hokudai Center for Zoonosis Control in Zambia in 2007 and introduced P3 laboratory in UNZA in 2008.
Since then, comprehensive survey of pathogens in humans, wildlife, domestic animals, and arthropods has been continued. Data on the spatiotemporal movement of host animals of pathogens have been acquired and the dynamics of spread and transmission have been mathematically analyzed from the genome information of pathogens to estimate the prevalence and mode of transmission of pathogens. Additionally, drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains have been collected and used for the elucidation of the mechanism of drug resistance acquisition. And obtained data are used for the development of rapid, simple, and low-cost methods for the detection of drug resistant M. tuberculosis. Furthermore, based on the genotype data, transmission pathway of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) has been elucidated for planning the countermeasure of MDR-TB through risk assessment. And furthermore, epidemiological surveys of extended spectrum beta lactamase-producing bacteria have been conducted.
