国内外の供用中の落橋事故に注目し,その原因に係わる要因を歴史的（「古代・中世・近世」と「近代」及び「現代」）に分類し,その主たる要因の背景を考察した. 現代における落橋の特徴について,維持管理の面から,冗長性の低い構造形式を紹介し,その維持管理上の重点項目について考察を行う.
