[I-153] Corrosion evaluation of the corroded main cable on an actual suspension bridge

Main cables and hanger ropes of old suspension bridges and stays of cable-stayed bridges have been exposed severe corrosion environment. Some of the steel wires are heavily corroded and fractured which is a serious problem all over the world. In this study, in order to clarify the corrosion condition of the cable, the main cables of an actual suspension bridge were disassembled, the corrosion conditions were visually investigated and chemical composition of corrosion products were analysed by FT-IR analysis. Furthermore, the possibility of evaluating the internal soundness of cable from the corrosion condition of appearance was mentioned.
