[III-522] Discrete element method simulations on wave propagation around a subsurface cavity
Keywords:Elastic wave propagation, Discrete element method, Subsurface cavity, Dynamic measurement
In-situ elastic wave survey is often conducted to investigate soil structure or stratum, while detecting a subsurface cavity is not easy. The authors previously conducted model tests and observed that the wave velocity and frequency response can be affected due to presence of a cavity. However, wave propagation characteristics around a subsurface cavity has not been fully understood. Thus, this research performed discrete element method simulations and observed a similar trend with the model test results in which high frequency contents attenuate due to reflection and diffraction around the cavity.
