Keywords:rail freight transportation, the torrential rains of west Japan, alternative transportation, environmental load
The torrential rains of west Japan in 2018 affected many railway lines, and the Sanyo Line, main line of freight railway, was disconnected for a long time. During that time, although freight railway took various measures in cooperation with other transportation, it had a significant social impact as it was far below the transport capacity of the ordinary period. In this study, among the social impacts occurred during the period when the function of rail freight was impaired, analysis and consideration were focused mainly on the environmental load. As a result, it was estimated carbon dioxide emissions from freight transportation in the period would increase significantly compared with normal times.
