Bentonite is considered to be a candidate for buffer material in geological disposal of high level radioactive waste. This study presents experimental results of basal space evolution of montmorillonite and swelling pressure during wetting compacted bentonite. Kunigel V1 was used to prepare 2 mm-thick specimens with different dry density. Specimens were installed in a newly developed XRD_swelling pressure apparatus, where a pressure sensor was installed to measure swelling pressure and a parallel X-ray beam was used to scan specimens before and after wetting specimens. Measured swelling pressure and X-ray profiles were reported in this paper.
