[CS2-01] PARTIAL GROUND IMPROVEMENT FOR DEEP EXCAVATION IN SOFT CLAY

Keywords:Ground improvement, Buttress, Partial base grouting, Soft clay, FEM

Although base grouting is often employed for excavation in soft clay, factors such as time and cost encourage design optimization with buttress and partial base grouting. For buttress design, Japanese method incorporates resistance below grouted body while Taiwanese method utilises friction along grouted body. On the other hand, equivalent properties or displacement methods can be applied for partial base grouting design. Case study shows buttress tends to be ineffective in very soft clay condition, but partial base grouting can be a cost-effective solution especially for narrow excavation.
