[CS2-04] EFFECT OF STRONG CONTRACTANCY ON THE SHEAR BEHAVIOUR OF VOLCANIC SOIL
Keywords:Strong contractancy,volcanic soil,shear behaviour,void ratio
Volcanic soils, which are found in several areas of Japan are lightweight, highly crushable and compressible, making them problematic from engineering and construction view point.
In this paper, the results of a research programme undertaken to investigate the effect of strong contractancy on the shear behaviour of volcanic soil are presented. Monotomic Undrained triaxial tests were conducted on volcanic soil specimens The results indicate that due to low crushing strength of volcanic soil the steady state was reached at small axial strain (5%) also increase in effective mean stress results in the remarkable contractive behaviour.
