[CS2-07] Centrifuge model tests on bearing characteristics of a pile supported by a thin sand layer
Keywords:Pile, Thin bearing layer, Centrifuge model test, Load-displacement curve, Horizontal earth pressure
Centrifuge model tests with N = 50 were performed to observe the behavior of a pile supported by thin Silica Sand No. 5 layer (Dr = 90%) underlain by loose Toyoura (Dr = 20%). The load-displacement curve values increase with layer thickness when ratio of pile diameter D to layer thickness H is less than 3 (H/D < 3). When the ratio is further increased, no significant change is observed. Moreover, analyses on horizontal earth pressure in soil surrounding pile tip indicate that plastic behavior of the soil is evident only up to a depth of 2D below the tip. Furthermore, the lower capacity values are correlated with lower confining pressure observed in thinner layers.
