Development of compact rainfall sensors suitable for vehicle observations were explored in this study. We applied a compact inexpensive microwave Doppler module and infrared-emitting/recieving diodes, which are originally designed for moving object detection, to rainfall measurements and rearranged them to be rainfall sensors. In order to investigate their applicability, those sensors were tested at a fixed point under actual rainfall and by moving measurements under artificial rainfall, using a laser precipitation monitor and a tipping bucket. The Doppler sensor showed a good correlation with rainfall intensity, while the infrared sensor did very low. More results will be presented.
