To cope with earthquake vibration, tuned mass damper (TMD) ideally requires a large mass, which is difficult to achieve due to design constraints. Also, TMD has a weak damping effect against pulse-like ground motions. In 1996, Kaneko et al. proposed powerful TMD (PTMD) which amplifies the displacement between TMD and target structure, adding an effect similar to increase in mass. However, the performance of PTMD with pulse-like ground motions has not been studied. In this study, we propose a TMD with reverse displacement mechanism (RTMD), amplifying the displacement in opposite direction to PTMD. The results show that RTMD has a greater effect on reducing pulse-like ground motions than TMD and PTMD.
