Deformation such as the heaving of road surface has been reported recently in both tunnels designed by NATM or timber-lagging method. New construction or reinforcement of inverted arch concrete in the basement of tunnel is performed. In this case, the residual of load-bearing capacity of current structure should be evaluated for design. The mechanical behavior of horizontal joint in lining, which may be regarded as one of the weak parts of tunnel sturucture constructed by timber-lagging method was clarified with two dimensional numerical analyis for the purpose of proposing the modeling and pointing out some notes for design.
