山岳トンネルの初期掘進において、発破掘削方式から機械掘削方式へ変更を行った。加えて、掘削機械の大型化（大型ホイールローダー）により掘削サイクル短縮を行った。
本稿では、完全週休二日制を実施しながら進捗を確保し、工期の短縮、生産性の向上に寄与した事例について報告する。
