Construction of Japanese expressway tunnels began in 1963, and the total length of these tunnels is now more than 1,800 km. NATM became the standard method in 1983, and before that, it was constructed using the timbering support method. Since the Central Nippon Expressway Company Limited mainly manages the Tomei, Meishin, Chuo Expressway, and other routes in the early days of the construction of the expressway, the timbering support method tunnels occupies 29% of the total. Countermeasures are issues. We would like to actively consider and introduce new methods to make maintenance work more efficient.
