This paper elucidates the reduction mechanism of the impulsive load of debris flow with driftwood utilizing the distinct element method. As a load reduction mechanism of debris flows with driftwood, driftwood concentrated at the surge part or the front part of debris flow is captured by an open sabo dam. The driftwood functions as cushioning material and the function reduces impulsive load received from the subsequent flow of debris flow. In the results, the impulsive load of debris flow with driftwood is smaller than that of bouldery debris flow.
