[S02E-01] Computations based on fluid-solid interaction for internal fluidization and failure in gravel layer due to vertically-upward flow
Keywords:fluidization, failure, fluid-structure interaction, seepage failure, internal fluidization, piping, boiling, gravel particle, vertically upward flow, effective stress
The internal fluidization and resulting failure in a gravel layer due to the vertically-upward water flow entering from the bottom surface was investigated with experiments and the computations taking account of the particle-scale fluid-solid interactions. In computations, the fluid forces acting on about 5,100 gravel-particles, each of which is represented with multiple tetrahedron elements, were calculated from the pressure and viscous terms. It was shown that the calculated processes of the internal fluidization and failure are in good agreement with the experiments. The consideration was also made in terms of the relationships between the fluid pressure $p'$ without hydrostatic one and the effective stress $\sigma'$ in the initial shape of the gravel layer.
