[S03B-06] Melting and Solidification Experiment of Lunar Soil Simulant, FJS-1 by Surface and Isotropic Heating
Keywords:Lunar regolith, FJS-1, Melting, Solidification, Lunar exploration
This study aims at obtaining basic knowledge on melting and solidification behavior of a lunar soil simulant, FJS-1 by surface and isotropic heating. The materials used are the original FJS-1, imitating the representative grading of lunar soil, and two sieved materials whose grain sizes are more and less than 0.1mm, respectively. Each material is either densely or loosely packed, and is heated either by surface or furnace heating with various conditions. The results show that (1) finer materials melt faster and deduce denser solid product, (2) denser products are stiffer and stronger, (3) Surface heating yields layered products whose physical properties differ in different layer, (4) Correlation between the uniaxial compression strength and Vickers hardness coefficient is confirmed, which is useful to evaluate the mechanical properties of layered products.
