[S03C-03] Application of ENS Method for Butt Weld Joint with Backing Plate

ENS method is one of the general methods to predict fatigue life from weld toe and root. In this paper, fatigue tests and life prediction by the method are conducted for two types of the butt weld joints with backing plate. Then, Kt, stress concentration factor, and ΔKt, efficient stress concentration factor, are calculated by numerical analysis. The results show the lower precision for joints with a low Kt, especially near the fatigue limit region. Consequently, it is found that the ENS method would be modified by Kt and could be a general assessment tool for various joints.
