[SS01B-03] A numerical study on the effects of rock shape characteristics on rockfall behavio
Keywords:Rockfall, Discrete Element Shape, Run-out Distance
The purpose of this study is to quantitatively evaluate the effect of the shape characteristics of rock mass on rockfall behavior. We conduct a series of rockfall simulation using the Discrete Element Method, which is a rigid body model that can directly model the shape of objects. Aspect ratio, flattening ratio, cut ratio, and sphericity are selected as parameters to express the shape characteristics of a rock mass. The relationship between these parameters and the distribution characteristics of run-out distance of rock mass is quantitatively analyzed. To evaluate the run-out characteristics, we use two indices: the moving distance and the ratio of the maximum moving distance to the average moving distance in the simulation cases.
