A topology optimization method was used to develop a lightweight and rigid cast metal bracket that does not require welded joints for use in bridge fall prevention structures. To evaluate the performance of this shape as a combined product, rather than as a stand-alone product, an assembly analysis was conducted under actual usage conditions to evaluate the performance in a more realistic environment. The new shape is approximately 30% lighter than the current shape, and its performance is equivalent or better.
