This study implements an eXtended finite element method to analyze the dynamic initiation and propagation of tensile cracks in rock slopes. A new algorithm for crack propagation is introduced to stabilize the evolution. Numerical results show that there is a difference in failure modes between the cases that the input oscillation lower and higher than the natural frequency of the slope.
