[23001-06-03] Lagrangian-type debris flow modeling using shallow water equations(Proceedings of Symposium on Applied Mechanics)
Keywords:debris flow, shallow water equations, smoothed particle hydrodynamics
This study presents a practical method applicable to modeling debris flows over wide areas. The debris flow is assumed to be a single-phase homogeneous viscous fluid whose behavior is governed by the depth-integrated shallow water equations. The fluid body is discretized using the mesh-free Lagrangian smoothed particle hydrodynamics method, whose calculation cost is defined by the number of particles regardless of the extent of the computational domain. To demonstrate the applicability of the model, experimental and actual debris flows are reproduced and discussed. The results indicate that the method can be useful in the evaluation, assessment, and mitigation of debris flow hazards over wide areas.
