The ballast material (crushed stone) that constitutes railway ballasted tracks is a granular material that disperses the train load and transfers it to the roadbed, and plays the role of quickly draining rainwater. In this study, the effect of the rotation of the ballast layer in the direction of the principal stress generated by the passing train load on the settlement of the ballast layer was investigated using the discrete element method.
