[Short Bio]
Dr. Markl is the Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Radiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He is also the Lester B. and Frances T. Knight Professor of Cardiac Imaging in the Departments of Radiology and Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University. He received his PhD in Physics from the University of Freiburg, Germany (2000), and served as a postdoctoral fellow at the Lucas MRI/S Center at Stanford University, Radiology (2001-2004). In 2004, he returned to the University Hospital in Freiburg, Germany as the Director of Cardiovascular MRI. Dr. Markl joined the Northwestern Radiology and BME faculty in 2011.
Dr. Markl's research program has had a major impact on the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease including development of novel imaging techniques for the assessment of cardiac structure, function and hemodynamics, and discovery of mechanisms underlying cardiovascular diseases development and stroke. He is internationally recognized as the pioneer of 4D flow MRI and work in this area has advanced the understanding of cardiovascular disease processes as well as enhanced patient care.
To date, his accomplishments include a total of >340 peer-reviewed publications, 800+ conference abstracts, 28 invited review articles, 3 clinical guideline or consensus statement documents, 11 book chapters, 12 patents, and >165 invited presentation.
